Melk/Durnstein 7 August

We docked in Melk at 6:00am. We had a busy day today. After an early breakfast we left the ship at 8:30 to board the bus to take us to the Melk Benedictine Abbey situated 130 feet above the Danube River. It is certainly an amazing place built over 900 years ago.

It was another extremely hot day so we decided to get the bus back to the ship instead of walking. We rested for a while before lunch at 12:30. At 1:00 we set off again through the Wachau Valley noted for its picturesque scenery & old castles & arrived in the town of Durnstein about 3:00.

Wachau Valley
At 3:30 we had an on-board demonstration of local apricot products from Wieser – Schnapps, Apricot Liqueur, Apricot jam, Apricot BBQ sauce, chocolate coated roasted apricot pips & salted roasted apricot pips.
At 4:30 we walked into the town with one main street so you can’t get lost. A very pretty little town indeed & it only took us an hour to do the round trip.

Durnstein
We went to the Port Talk before dinner. After dinner we went up to the sun deck with an English couple we had befriended. We were the only ones up there. Finally cracked the bottle of Proseco (Champagne) I got for my birthday. We sat up there until 11:00pm. It was a lovely evening relaxing in the cool after such a hot day.
